They say that if you want to know how old Mick Jaggar and Kieth Richards are that you need to cut them open and count the rings. The Rolling Stones are now entering the second half of their fifth decade in rock and roll. And the group that started in the 60s, now has member who are in their 60s. But in the years that they tour, they always end up at the top of the list for concert sales. They have also maintained their bluesy-rock foundation which is an important part of their music. (That is overlooking the awful 1976 "Black and Blue" album where they attempted a little disco blend). As they also say, I would rather eat barbed wire than listen to the Rolling Stones do disco (or something like that anyway). The Four Seasons were able to pull it off, but Frankie Vallie always sang like a girl anyway, on top of the fact that their career had already died.

The Stones best LPs creatively were in the 60s. Pretty much anything from the 60s is classic and worth a listen. The early seventies, the style became 70-ish, but good rock and roll. Probably one of their best album, I think, is the 1974 LP "It's Only Rock and Roll." The title track is a rock and roll anthem not to be overlooked or matched by very few (if any). If any? That's just my way of saying I can't think of one to match it, but there might be one I forgot and I don't want to come back and have to write "oh yeah, I forgot about..such and such." (Did they do a song called "Such and Such?") . Anyway the Stones have proved that rock and roll is not just for the young, as it was once considered. And that rock and roll never dies...which was a cool anthem back in the early days of rock and roll, but now is a profound reality in its later days. Rock and roll endured the disco days and was not devoured by the Bee Gee lovin, John Travolta Dancin, Boogie Nights Feverin, Tear That Sucker Down Music. (Put that in a category, eh, Billboard???)

It's hard to say if even the Beatles could have pulled off the longevity of the Stones when you consider the variety of styles they played with. As a Beatles fan, I would like to think so, but we will never know. And would Elvis be capping off his career by singing at Casinos? Luckily for us (and them, too I guess), The Stones didn't have to die young to become legends (with due respects to the late Brian Jones). And as they say "a rolling stone gathers no moss." I don't know how fitting it is to end this article that way, but how can you write about the Rolling Stones without throwing in that cliche?
